Kentucky Owl 11 Year Straight Rye Whiskey

The whiskey community has a giant boner for Kentucky Owl, and with good reason. Well-aged, cask strength rye whiskey is one of our absolute favorite things in life. And damn has it been hard to come by lately!!!

The last one that really hit it out of the park was Booker's 13 Year Rye, but it was gone in the blink of an eye at the frankly boner-shrinking price of $599. Kentucky Owl has delivered the first knock out rye of 2017 in their 11-Year Cask Strength Straight Kentucky Rye.

Kentucky Owl was a defunct brand founded in 1879 by C.M. Dedman and closed during Prohibition when they were denied a medicinal production license. Dedman's great-great-grandson, Dix Dedman resurrected the brand in 2014. He sourced batches of bourbon and then re-barreled to marry the flavors and add more age and wood to the mix. His bourbons were a serious hit on the secondary market, reaching over $400 a bottle.

This is KO's first rye. It's rumored to be a blend of barrels from Brown Foreman and Heaven Hill and to be a 95% rye, though neither the source or the exact mashbill have been confirmed. What we can confirm is that it's mighty delicious, filling in the huge void that we'd been struggling with in the rye market. This is certainly not an everyday pour. But if you're looking for truly special bottle for the holidays it's an awesome choice.
