Starlight, Starbright, a bourbon and a rye I see tonight! This is the first barrel in our pair of sister barrels from Starlight!
Starlight is part of Huber Orchard, Winery, & Vineyard in Borden, Indiana. Yes it's actually Indiana bourbon but it's not MGP! Huber is doing a ton of interesting things. They sent us a very cool lineup of barrels, and this particular bourbon and rye combination was too good to pass up. We're featuring the bourbon today and will have the rye coming soon!
Let's have a taste. Wow really nice nose, definitely has some wheat in this little beast! It's a lovely combination of baked bread and spices. Really kind of smells like a rye bread! Lovely sweet wheat with charring brown butter, just that indescribable bakery smell, and then all these spices come in - caraway, exotic sechuan flavors, anise and allspice. The palate gets sweet with candied lemons, bitter orange rind, some cake frosting. As the glass opens up we get some lovely campfire aromas coming out. Puffs of smoke, some burning birch wood. Fireplace glory. The finish is spicy and sweet and more of that bakery goodness. Definitely some kick ass spirit strength in the finish, you know this is a cask strength beauty.
Really unique and delicious whiskey here. Totally unexpected directions coming together into something completely new yet also right in the pocket! Great stuff from Starlight, no wonder their private barrel program is so popular right now!
